Carl Hansen

The company was founded by cabinetmaker Carl Hansen in Odense on the island of Funen. The focus was initially on local manufacturing on a small scale. During the 1940s and 50s, production evolved towards serial manufacturing of architect-designed furniture, with manufacturing continuing in Denmark.

The manufacturing process at Carl Hansen & Søn combines traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. Each piece of furniture, from tables and chairs to sun loungers in wood, and garden benches, is made from solid wood, often oak, beech, or walnut. In the company's own facilities, every part is assembled, sanded, and surface-treated with great precision. With a strong focus on sustainability, certified wood species and resource-efficient methods are used throughout production.

Designer collaborations focusing on function and material

A central part of the company's development is the collaboration with Hans J. Wegner. The collaboration began in 1949 and includes a large number of models, several of which are still part of the range. Several of Wegner's chairs are produced according to original drawings with the same level of craftsmanship as at their launch.

Carl Hansen & Søn also produces models drawn by designers such as Kaare Klint, Ole Wanscher, Børge Mogensen, Poul Kjærholm, Bodil Kjær, and Arne Jacobsen. Common to many of these is a clear functional starting point, where proportions, woodwork, and construction are given ample space.

Models with long continuity

One of the company's most widespread models is the CH24, also called the Wishbone Chair or the Y-chair. The chair was designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1949 and has been in continuous production ever since. The model is characterized by its back in steam-bent wood and hand-woven seat in paper cord.

Other models from Wegner include the CH07 Shell Chair, CH25 Lounge Chair, and CH88 Dining Chair. Several of these have seen renewed interest as interest in Danish post-war design has grown internationally.

The assortment also includes the Colonial Chair by Ole Wanscher and the BM series, designed by Børge Mogensen. The focus is on furniture with high usability and clear material quality.

Sustainable production and long lifespan

Carl Hansen & Søn works with long lifespan as a founding principle. Material selection and construction are adapted so that the furniture can be used for a long time, and in many cases repaired or renovated if necessary.

The company manufactures furniture in certified wood species and uses glues, surface treatments, and assembly methods with low environmental impact. Investments in energy-efficient equipment and waste reduction are part of the company's overall production strategy.
