Living room lamps

To create a living room that feels lively and functional, it is often recommended to have between five and seven different light points, depending on the size of the room. Relying solely on a ceiling lamp rarely provides the right atmosphere. Instead, one should work with different levels of light. A ceiling lamp serves as a base for general lighting but needs to be complemented with directed light and mood lighting for the room to truly come into its own.

Floor lamps provide effective spot lighting where the room needs a clearer focus, for example by an armchair for reading or in darker corners that lack general light. By working with wall lamps, it is possible to direct light towards art or a textured wall surface while creating a soft grazing light that feels more pleasant than lighting directly from above. A window lamp can also mark the transition between the room and the outside, giving the interior a more welcoming expression.

Design and function in harmony

The choice of fixture should be guided by both aesthetics and function. If the ability to adjust brightness is desired, a dimmable lamp or a model with an integrated dimmer is preferable. This allows you to easily switch from bright light for cleaning or working to a more subdued light for the evening.

The choice of material also affects how the light spreads. A shade in glass or opal plastic often spreads a diffuse, soft light in all directions, like many lamps from Foscarini. A metal shade instead directs the light more distinctly downwards or upwards, creating clearer contrasts. Table lamps in stone or marble, such as Snoopy from Flos, add weight and materiality even when the lamp is switched off.

Flexible solutions and portable lighting

The modern home demands flexibility. In recent years, rechargeable cordless lamps have become an important feature in interior design. These portable lamps make it easy to move the light source as needed, from the side table to the bookshelf, without being limited by power outlets. Brands like Vitra and Flos offer several models where technology enables a cordless design without compromising on light quality.

Colour temperature and atmosphere

The choice of colour temperature is crucial for the room's character and the desired effect. Generally, a warm white light is recommended to create an inviting feeling. Colder light can feel sterile in a home environment but works well for specific task lighting.

By combining a ceiling lamp that provides good general lighting with accent lighting from table lamps and floor lamps, you create a room with depth and dynamics. The combination of different types of lighting greatly influences how the room is experienced and how the interior design is showcased.
