The Serge Mouille brand originates from Paris and is closely associated with French lighting design of the 1950s. Serge Mouille, born in 1922 in Paris, was early trained in the applied arts and developed an advanced technique for shaping metal. As an established silversmith and designer, he created design lamps that combine precision, movement, and sculptural form. Serge Mouille lamps are characterized by black, matte surfaces and adjustable arms, making them a central element of modern lighting.

Serge Mouille – French design lighting with historical roots

The Serge Mouille brand is built on a strong craft tradition where lighting, form, and function interact. After studying applied arts in Paris and working at Hénin Orfèvre, Serge Mouille established himself as a silversmith. After World War II, he started his own business and became a recognized craftsman while also teaching at ENSAAMA in Paris, where he later led the silversmith workshop.

A defining moment for the Serge Mouille brand came in 1951 when Jacques Adnet commissioned him to design a large floor lamp. The result was the iconic Three-Arm Floor Lamp, marking the beginning of the series later known as Black Shapes. These design lamps laid the foundation for Serge Mouille’s position within modern lighting.

Sculptural lamps with flexible function

Serge Mouille lamps are designed to combine mobility and precision. The articulated arms allow the light to be directed as needed, making each floor lamp, wall lamp, or ceiling lamp functional in various environments.

The design is characterized by a light and graphic structure where each element has a clear function. Serge Mouille lighting is used both as ambient lighting and as a directional light source, making the design lamps relevant in both private homes and public spaces.

Materials and craftsmanship in Serge Mouille lamps

Serge Mouille lamps are made of metal with great precision, reflecting his background as a silversmith. The black matte lacquer provides a consistent expression that defines the brand. The inside of the shades is often light to optimize light distribution.

Some models feature brass details that age and develop a patina over time. The combination of metal, balance, and movement makes Serge Mouille lighting a clear example of functional design rooted in craftsmanship.

An established name in modern lighting

During the 1950s and early 1960s, Serge Mouille developed his most well-known lamps, which were exhibited in contexts such as the Steph Simon Gallery in Paris alongside other prominent designers. In the 1960s, he also experimented with new types of lighting, including light columns with fluorescent tubes.

In 1963, Serge Mouille chose to cease production of his lamps and focused entirely on teaching until his passing in 1988. Despite the short production period, the Serge Mouille brand has secured a lasting position within French design and modern lighting.

Original and collector’s value

Original pieces by Serge Mouille have over time become highly sought-after collector’s items and now achieve very high prices at international auction houses. Interest in the early examples is strong among collectors worldwide, underscoring the brand’s significance within modern lighting design.

Production continues on a small scale in a workshop outside Paris, where each lamp is crafted with great care. Only a limited number of lamps are produced annually, helping to maintain quality and the artisanal heritage.

NO GA is one of the few retailers offering original pieces from Serge Mouille, with a selection that reflects the brand’s classic design language and production principles.
