The timeless Domus chair was designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara for the Finnish furniture manufacturer Artek. The chair is classic in its cuts and has simple and clean shapes. Over the years, it has become a true classic in Finnish furniture design. The chair was designed as a universal chair to meet the different needs of the Domus Academica student accommodation in Helsinki. Originally, it was intended to function as a work chair in the student rooms, but also in halls, auditoriums, canteens and offices, as well as several other spaces. Domus became such a great success in Finland that it was the first Finnish-designed furniture item to be exported and also produced under license in other parts of the world, such as at Knoll International in the USA.
The Domus chair is made of solid birch and has a back and seat in plywood, but is also available with an upholstered seat or an upholstered back and seat. Domus is available in different finishes such as clear lacquered birch, honey stained birch, white lacquered birch, or black stained birch. Domus is stackable, making it a functional chair for smaller spaces.
