Hashira – origin and materials

The design is based on the fundamental geometric shapes of the traditional Japanese rice lamp, but interpreted here in a context of international modernism and Nordic material knowledge. By replacing the rice paper with textile, Norm Architects and Audo Copenhagen create a luminaire that balances structured austerity with soft, material-driven warmth.

Common to all luminaires in the Hashira series is the use of semi-transparent linen. The fabric, often referred to as Raw, has a structure that effectively filters the light and highlights the material's natural irregularities when the lamp is lit. The inner steel structure is faintly visible through the fabric when illuminated, giving the pillar shape its characteristic grid pattern. This effect is a conscious nod to the wooden frames that support traditional Japanese lanterns.

Models and lighting in the room

The pendant lamps and the ceiling lamp constitute the series' overall lighting layer. The pendant lamps are available as a solitaire, in a cluster of three, and as a linear model. The linear variant uses magnetic mounts that hold the shade in place without visible screws, providing a clean and cohesive silhouette. All pendants spread light both upwards and downwards and are dimmable, making them suitable for long tables, workspaces, and rooms where the light intensity needs to be adjustable. The ceiling lamp is mounted directly against the ceiling and spreads light evenly in all directions, providing the room with a general light that complements the pendants.

The wall, floor, and table lamps build upon the same textile cylinder but with features adapted for their respective environments. As a luminaire mounted tightly against the wall, the wall lamp provides a soft, directed glow suitable for corridors or bedside areas. The floor lamp takes on a more sculptural role with its ash wood base, balancing the textile body and creating a distinct vertical light point in the room. The table lamp, available both with a cord and in a portable version, offers a flexible solution for side tables, shelves, or as supplementary task lighting. Common to all three models is that they add local lighting without glare and deepen the room's atmosphere with a soft, ambient glow.

Norm Architects and Audo Copenhagen
