The eye-catching armchair and lounge furniture 400, also known as the Tank Chair, was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1936 for the Finnish furniture manufacturer Artek. The Tank Chair 400 is a milestone in modern functionalist furniture design and is one of Alvar Aalto's most important works, which is currently on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. When Aalto designed the furniture, it was for a fair in Milan, the Milan Triennale. The voluminous armchair attracted great interest and was also awarded a prize during the fair. Tank was an exception to the designer's signature style and other furniture due to its size and background. Before that, Aalto had designed all his chairs and armchairs for various architectural destinations and public environments, but when the Tank chair was designed, it was solely on commission for the Triennale in Milan.
The wide seat and the strong armrests, which also act as legs, inspire high comfort and also give the chair its unique characteristic appearance, which is also reminiscent of a tank. Tank has a more massive and powerful appearance, unlike many other of Aalto's chairs. The Tank armchair has a frame and legs made of molded birch and a seat with nosag elastic that is also upholstered with polyurethane and dacron wadding for maximum comfort and resilience that lasts over time.
