Platner– Knoll

The Platner series was designed in 1966 by the American architect and designer Warren Platner for Knoll. The company was founded in the United States in 1938 by Hans Knoll and developed furniture in close dialogue with modern architecture. The series is defined by welded steel rods forming an open circular structure where construction and form work together in balanced proportions.

Platner – Knoll

The Platner series is based on a construction where thousands of bent steel rods are welded together. This construction provides high stability to the furniture. At the same time, it creates a light and open visual expression. Each part is carefully proportioned to give the form an organic overall impression.

The metal rods are available in nickel-plated steel or bronze-plated steel. Nickel-plated steel has a shiny and reflective surface. Bronze-plated steel provides a warmer and more subdued expression. The choice of finish affects both the furniture's character and how it interacts with its surroundings.

Tabletops are offered in clear glass or marble. Glass provides transparency and allows the sculptural base to be the focal point. Marble adds weight and a distinct material feel. The natural veining makes each slab unique. Marble requires regular and proper care to maintain its appearance over time.

Variants and Applications

The Platner series includes dining tables, coffee tables, side tables, armchairs, and chairs. The series is developed for use in various types of environments. Platner tables, often with round glass tops, can serve as central furniture pieces in dining settings.

Platner coffee tables and Platner side tables can be used in living rooms or lounge environments. The sculptural base gives the furniture a distinct architectural character. They can function as both functional surfaces and freestanding design elements.

Platner armchairs and Platner chairs are designed for sitting for extended periods. The shaped shells provide balanced support. Upholstery in textile or leather allows for customization based on the area of use. The series is designed for use in private homes as well as in public environments.

Warren Platner's Design Philosophy

Warren Platner was an American designer and architect who created the Platner collection with the ambition to integrate form into spatial contexts. His background in architecture characterizes the furniture series' structural integrity and proportions. Platner developed furniture that was both functional and sculptural. He used industrial techniques to achieve organic forms, which represented a further development in modern design for his time. His work with the series reflects a meticulous attention to detail and an understanding of how materials interact to create a cohesive whole.
