Designer Jean Prouvé realised that the greatest stress is placed on the two rear legs of a chair and subsequently designed the chair with significantly stronger rear legs. The two front legs, which are the least stressed, are made of thinner steel tubes and the rear ones are made of thicker metal sections. The chair has become a modern classic and a design icon.
