FK64 Scimitar Chair

The FK64 Scimitar Chair is an armchair from Danish Carl Hansen, designed in 1963 by Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm. The chair was first presented at the Carpenters' Autumn Exhibition in Copenhagen that year and reflects the designers' respective backgrounds in blacksmithing and cabinetmaking.

The idea for the armchair's wide and low seat emerged during Kastholm's time in Lebanon, where the tradition of sitting close to the ground on carpets inspired a relaxed sitting position with the option of sitting with crossed legs. Together with Fabricius, he developed the concept into a softly shaped seat in bent veneer, upholstered in leather or textile.

The name refers to the characteristically curved blade of a scimitar, a shape that recurs in the armchair's crescent-shaped stainless steel base. The sculptural base makes the seat appear to be floating and creates a clear contrast between the austere expression of the steel and the softly contoured seat.
