Large rugs
Size is crucial when choosing a rug. A model that is too small can make the furniture feel scattered, whilst a larger one creates a distinct zone where everything interacts. In the living room, a spacious rug should accommodate at least the front legs of the sofa, but preferably the entire furniture group to provide a calm and cohesive expression.
In the dining room, even more surface area is needed. A rug under the table should extend at least 60 centimetres beyond the tabletop so that the chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out. This protects the floor and provides a more balanced composition. Rectangular models often suit long tables, whilst a round rug can soften rooms with many straight lines. The right dimension creates balance and makes the room feel more generous.
Material choice and texture
The choice of material affects not only the appearance but also how you use and care for your rug. A wool rug is often the primary choice in both homes and other contexts thanks to the natural properties of wool. Wool is dirt-repellent and durable, and has the ability to recover after pressure from furniture. A large wool rug also provides a matte and sophisticated surface that ties together the room's colours, which is evident in series such as Grand from Nordic Knots, where the dense, cut pile contributes to an even and durable surface.
Cotton is an alternative when you are looking for a lighter, more pliable rug. It is particularly suitable for rooms where you want a soft expression, easy handling, and a material that feels pleasant underfoot.
For bedrooms or lounge areas where comfort is a priority, rya rugs with a long pile can be an option. The high pile in a larger rya rug provides sound dampening and a soft surface to walk on.
International design and brands
At Nordiska Galleriet, you will find large rugs from leading brands such as Kasthall and cc-tapis. Kasthall represents Swedish craftsmanship with carefully balanced materials and colours, whilst cc-tapis offers hand-knotted rugs where pattern and form have a more artistic presence in the room.
Whether you are looking for a solid grey or white rug for a more stripped-back look, or a graphic pattern that adds character, there are several directions to explore. A large white rug can open up a darker room, whilst a deeper grey tone adds stability and defines the furnishing. By choosing a rug with care, you influence the atmosphere of the entire room.
Care and maintenance
For a large rug to retain its shape and quality over time, a rug underlay covering the entire surface is recommended. It reduces wear, prevents the rug from slipping, and contributes to better air circulation, which in turn extends the durability of the materials.
Regarding cleaning, regular vacuuming is the most crucial step. Use a flat nozzle and vacuum in the direction of the pile to protect the fibres. Stains on wool should be treated immediately with lukewarm water and a clean cloth, and always without rubbing. For more extensive cleaning, especially of more sensitive materials like viscose, professional flat washing is the gentlest option, as water-based washing at home risks affecting the rug's structure and shape.
