This art book introduces Marc Chagall's visual world and his special position within 20th-century modern art.
Marc Chagall (1887–1985) developed a painting style where memory, myth and tradition meet in a symbol-saturated visual language. His work is characterized by deep colors, often with a blue predominance, and motifs that recur in different variations: musicians, roosters, rooftop landscapes, flowers and floating figures. The brushwork is free, but the compositions are complex and carry layers of personal and cultural significance.
The book follows recurring themes in Chagall's art – birth, love, marriage and death – in motifs from the Vitebsk of his childhood to Paris. It shows how the artist combines Jewish identity with the French avant-garde, religious symbolism with everyday scenes.
As part of TASCHEN's series of artist monographs, the volume presents an artist whose work has become central references in modern art history, and whose imagery continues to influence contemporary interpretations of dream, faith, and identity.
