Mark Rothko: Paintings on Paper Art Book

Mark Rothko: Paintings on Paper is an art book from Yale University Press that highlights a lesser-known but central part of Mark Rothko's artistry – his paintings on paper. The book is published in conjunction with the first major exhibition in over forty years devoted entirely to these works. Rothko is best known for his monumental color field paintings, but throughout his career he created over 1,000 works on paper – not as sketches, but as finished paintings with the same depth and expression as his more well-known canvases. The book collects around a hundred of these works and spans figurative motifs, surrealist phases and the characteristic rectangular color fields with soft edges. The texts by Adam Greenhalgh are based on the research behind the catalogue raisonné of Rothko's works on paper and provide new perspectives on the artist's practice and legacy. The book is part of New Mag's range of art books and is recommended for anyone who wants to delve into abstract painting and modern art history.
