The Gourmand’s Egg. A Collection of Stories & Recipes is a coffee table book from the German publisher Taschen, produced in collaboration with the British magazine The Gourmand. The book explores the role of the egg as a symbol, raw material and cultural idea – through art, history, photography and gastronomy.

The book consists of newly written essays, recipes and visual interpretations – from the perfect poached egg to compositions for the dessert table. The perspectives range from ancient rituals to contemporary culinary art, with elements of Egyptian mythology, Roman customs and iconic objects such as the Fabergé egg.

The book is richly illustrated with newly taken still lifes in The Gourmand’s characteristic style – sensual, absurd and tactile – and is complemented by works by artists such as Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dalí, Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Hockney and Man Ray. Texts by Ruth Reichl and Jennifer Higgie, among others, give the book a reflective and artistic tone.
