dk3 - Origin and Design Philosophy

dk3 was established in 2009 by Jacob Plejdrup in Denmark. Since its inception, the company has focused on creating furniture with a strong connection to nature. The design philosophy is based on uniting traditional craftsmanship with modern design, resulting in furniture that exhibits a clear character and a solid construction. Each piece of furniture is manufactured with precision, highlighting the natural structure of the materials.

Designers and Collaborations

dk3 has collaborated with several prominent designers, both contemporary and historical. Founder Jacob Plejdrup is behind several of the brand's central furniture pieces, including the well-known Ten Table and Plank Table. These tables are characterized by their robust dimensions and prominent wood grain.

The brand has also re-launched works by significant Danish designers. For example, Poul Cadovius' modular storage system Royal System was given new life in its 2010 update. Søren Rose Studio is also featured in the collection with his Plateau coffee table, featuring a solid wood top and a powder-coated steel base. Other designers who have contributed to the collection include Christian Troels and Jeppe Utzon.

Material Selection and Sustainability

Material choices constitute a central part of dk3's identity. Solid wood, such as oak and walnut, is dominant in the assortment. These wood types are chosen for their durability and ability to age with dignity. The surface is often treated with oil, which highlights the wood's natural grain and provides a tactile feel. Oil-treated wood requires regular care, but it develops an aesthetic patina over time. For bases and details, metal is often used, such as powder-coated steel or brushed steel. The metal contributes stability and a visual contrast to the wood's organic expression. This combination of materials ensures a long lifespan and high quality for each piece of furniture.

Assortment and Function

dk3's assortment primarily includes furniture for the dining area and living room. Dining tables like the Ten Table and Plank Table are designed to be focal points for social gatherings. The heavy material makes the tables stable, but the design gives a light impression in the room. Jeppe Utzon's Table #1 can also be complemented with an extension leaf, providing greater flexibility.

Storage systems like Royal System offer adaptable solutions for various spaces and needs, with wall-mounted rails and hangers in stainless steel or brass. Coffee tables and side tables also complement the collection, creating a cohesive interior environment. The furniture is designed to meet high demands for both aesthetics and function in the modern home.
