Big Shadow Floorlamp

Floor lamps stand directly on the floor, require no fixed installation and can easily be moved between different areas of the home. This makes them a flexible way to add light, define zones and introduce character into a room.
A floor lamp is often used where other light sources are not enough. It supplements existing lighting and helps create atmosphere, especially in living rooms and reading corners. With the right model, a floor lamp can visually define a space, shift the function of a piece of furniture and support a carefully considered interior.
The origin and function of the floor lamp
When electric lighting became common in private homes during the early twentieth century, new ways of placing and directing light emerged. The floor lamp offered the possibility to move light freely in a room without relying on ceiling or wall fixtures. This changed how interiors could be arranged.
Designers quickly embraced the format. Some of the most recognisable lights in modern design history are floor lamps, including the AJ lamp from 1960 by Arne Jacobsen, and the Gräshoppa from 1947 by Greta Magnusson Grossman.
In 1962 Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni introduced the Arco, an arc lamp with a sweeping steel arc and a marble base, designed to provide downward light without ceiling mounting. The floor lamp has become a classic in Italian design.
Floor lamps in various styles
There are many types of floor lamps. Some provide directional light, others distribute light more broadly. A slim model with an adjustable shade works well as a reading lamp. An uplighter casts light towards the ceiling and reflects it back softly into the room.
There are also decorative floor lamps where form and volume take precedence, with wide shades in textile or glass that make the lamp an active part of the interior architecture. A floor lamp can be used to define areas of a room without altering its layout.
Many models are easy to move, which makes them suitable for homes that change over time. They work equally well in the living room, hallway, workspace and bedroom.
Materials and colour
The choice of material has a strong effect on both the appearance and the light quality. Metal is used where precision and stability are essential. Black lacquered aluminium is common in modern designs, while brass gives a warmer expression. Brass is often combined with white glass or muted textiles.
Wooden floor lamps fit naturally in interiors with other organic materials. The structure of the wood provides a soft transition between the lamp and its surroundings.
Common colours include black and white, but many models are also available in grey, dark green, brass, walnut and lighter woods. Colour and finish determine how the lamp interacts with furniture and other lighting sources. A black lamp makes a strong graphic statement, while a white lamp blends in more subtly.
Technology, light sources and function
Most floor lamps today use LED, which provides long lifespan and energy efficient lighting. Many models are dimmable, either through a built in dial or a touch control.
Dimming allows you to adjust the mood throughout the day. Directional light can be strengthened when needed and softened in the evening. The construction of the shade determines how the light is distributed.
A narrow beam is ideal for focused lighting. A broader diffuser in textile or opal glass creates a more ambient effect. Several models can even serve as the only light source in a smaller room.
Product selection
The range includes floor lamps from Gubi, Louis Poulsen, Verpan, Flos, Santa and Cole, DCW éditions, Vitra and New Works.
Examples of models that combine function and form include Arco by Flos. Others, such as Fun 1STM by Verpan or Material Floor Lamp by New Works, work both as light sources and as sculptural elements.
Many lamps are available in several variations including colour, material and size. This makes it easy to create a cohesive solution across multiple rooms. Some models even combine functions, such as floor lamps with integrated side tables or portable battery powered lamps.
Floor lamps as part of the interior
A floor lamp is often placed where additional lighting is needed without installing new fixtures. This might be beside a sofa, next to a bookcase or in a corner where ceiling light does not reach. The lamp strengthens the structure of the room and supports the atmosphere created by textiles, furniture and colour choices.
Floor lamps also help create visual balance. Placing a tall slender lamp next to a low sofa or table introduces height variations that enhance the spatial feel. Combining different levels of light makes it possible to work with both practical illumination and ambience in the same area.
Thanks to the wide range of heights, materials and light types, the floor lamp is a flexible category. Many models work just as well in central living spaces as in work areas, bedroom or temporary reading corners.
Placement and function determine how a lamp is used, but a well chosen floor lamp provides both light and presence wherever it stands.
