A well-chosen armchair can define and transform an entire room. It combines functionality with character, comfort, and presence. Unlike a conventional chair, where the seating position is often more upright, the armchair is designed for deeper, more extended comfort. The word comes from the French fauteuil, meaning an upholstered chair with open armrests. The balance between aesthetics, craftsmanship, and ergonomics has always been central to its design. At NO GA, armchairs are presented as spatial elements, selected for their form, material quality, and ability to integrate into a thoughtfully designed interior.

The role of the armchair in interior design

An armchair can serve as a solo piece in a room or as a complement to a sofa or larger seating area. Its design often has a strong visual presence that provides balance. A considered armchair choice adds an extra seat in spaces such as a living room, bedroom, or library and creates zones for conversation or seclusion. Choosing a sculptural form, where construction and lines are highlighted, can elevate the overall interior. To add texture and warmth, armchairs can be complemented with decorative cushions and throws.

Leaning back with full support is not just about comfort—it’s also about ergonomics. Many renowned designers have dedicated themselves to optimizing the seating experience, with models featuring high backs and adjustable mechanisms. Armchairs from brands like Vitra and Walter Knoll provide superior support for the neck and back, making them ideal for those seeking a comfortable and relieving sitting position over longer periods.

Design, materials, and origin

Our armchair collection is based on a selection of international designs that represent the highest standards of form and production. Here, advanced manufacturing techniques meet traditional craftsmanship. Material choices stand out—from vegetable-tanned leather and solid wood to woven rattan, innovative textiles, and molded shells. Each material contributes to the chair’s character and long-term durability.

The designer’s intention often determines the chair’s form and purpose. A linear and graphic armchair, like those from Poliform, emphasizes proportion, structure, and a controlled simplicity suited to formal settings. In contrast, brands like Ritzwell and Zanotta offer models with softer, more organic forms, where materials and craftsmanship add tactile warmth. For smaller spaces, there are also compact armchairs, often without armrests, offering a light and minimalist silhouette.

Modular solutions such as K-Waiting by Kartell also broaden the perception of the armchair as a typology. The series consists of upholstered modular seating elements that can be used as standalone armchairs or combined into larger seating landscapes. With its geometric design language and flexible configurations, it demonstrates how contemporary seating furniture can be adapted to both private and public environments.

Footstool and extended comfort

A footstool is a natural addition to many armchairs. A matching footstool extends the armchair’s function by offering support for the feet and legs. This creates a more complete relaxation zone and enhances the sense of generosity. In the NO GA collection, you’ll find models from Bruno Mathsson International, where the footstool is designed as a seamless extension of the armchair, merging aesthetics with ergonomic comfort.

For those who prefer high-backed armchairs, wingback chairs offer both privacy and comfort with their enveloping shape.

NO GA presents a range of armchairs from brands such as Gubi, Källemo, and Frederica Furniture—pieces that, through their design and origin, serve as references in furniture artistry, carefully chosen for their quality and durability.
