High quality antique furniture
In 1912, farmer Anders Andersson built a large and lavish property on Nybrogatan. It is here that the history of Nordiska Galleriet begins, which will become an obvious destination for exclusive furniture and modern design.
After the construction of the building in 1912, the Auktionshallen opens in the premises at Nybrogatan 11. The original intention was to organize quality auctions for art and antique furniture, but the idea was scrapped and they switched to selling high quality antique furniture instead. The store's large space is eventually supplemented by the sale of cars, creating the somewhat odd combination of selling antique furniture and modern cars under one roof.
However, car sales were discontinued when Anders Andersson's nephew Carl-Otto Heigard took over the company in 1929. Heigard instead complements the furniture store with an art gallery and in 1933 establishes the name Nordiska Galleriet to reflect the new focus of the company. The company AB Nordiska Galleriet was registered the same year, which is the limited company that still runs the business today.
The Danish era
In the 1940s, Carl-Magnus Heigard takes over the business (Carl-Ottos Heigard's son) and starts a renewal of the concept. The 1950s saw the start of the "Danish era" at Nordiska Galleriet, which began with a famous exhibition of furniture by designers such as Nanna and Jörgen Ditzel, Jörgen Höj and Finn Juhl. In 1954, designer Jörgen Höj designs the new Nordiska Galleriet logo, which is the same logo used until 2017.
Viva l'Italia
The tradition of exhibitions continues with the exhibition 'Inspiration -63' with Börge Mogensen, Hans J. Wegner, Jörgen Höj and others. The exhibition 'Viva l'Italia' in 1967 with Tobia Scarpa, among others, where Cassina and B&B Italia were seriously introduced in Sweden was a great success. At the end of the 1970s, an exhibition was presented where the Eames couple launched their furniture in Sweden. In the same year, Tobia Scarpa also designed the Nordiska Galleriet's self-produced sofa Familjesoffan, which can still be found at auctions today.
International collaboration
In 1982, Carl-Magnus Heigard transfers the company to former store manager Anders Carnerud. Exhibitions continued and the company was visited by, among others, Giulio Cappellini and Antonio Citterio, who later made great names for themselves in the world of design. During the latter part of the 1990s, an extensive renovation is carried out, including the original checkered stone floor, which becomes a recognizable feature of the store with its characteristic pattern.
After 22 years, Anders Carnerud sells Nordiska Galleriet to Olle Heigard, a relative of the company's original founder. The business continues to operate in the same spirit as before with a focus on strong brands, famous designers and modern design.
In 2016, Axel Söderberg buys the company, launching another era of renewal and modernization of Nordiska Galleriet. With a focus on quality, knowledge and service, much of Nordiska Galleriet's former glory days are re-launched. The concept has been refined and today art from well-known artists once again hangs on the walls. Nordiska Galleriet is once again visited by famous designers, including Patricia Urquiola, who presented her new furniture collection for Cassina in spring 2017. The ambition level has been raised and the goal is to create a world-leading destination store for a design-interested audience.
