Herman Miller

Herman Miller is an American brand whose history goes back as far as 1905 under the name Star Furniture Company. Already then, there was a strong focus on high quality, although they produced a completely different type of furniture, in a traditional style, unlike the famous furniture we see today.

This was changed during the Great Depression through the success of designer Gilbert Rohde in persuading D.J. De Pree to step away from traditional models and focus on products that better suited the changing needs and lifestyles of the United States.

Future changes

The 1940s saw the biggest changes that would create the brand that characterizes Herman Miller today. Gilbert Rohde, who had long been responsible for the design of the product, was brought into contact with George Nelson, the man behind the popular Nelson Bubble lamps. During the same period, they also met the famous Charles and Ray Eames, who would later design the unforgettable classics Eames Plastic Chair and Eames Lounge Chair.

On the European market, the Swiss brand Vitra is today responsible for many of the classics designed by the Eames couple, by George Nelson, and by Alexander Girard. In Sweden, Herman Miller is perhaps more synonymous with ergonomic office chairs such as Aeron, Sayl, Mirra 2, and Embody.
