The Chieftain Sofa, like its equally famous sibling Chieftain Chair, was designed in 1949 by Finn Juhl in collaboration with the master carver Niels Vodder. Today, the Chieftain Sofa is manufactured by hand by House of Finn Juhl. The very exclusive sofa with its soft shapes is made of walnut or oak and upholstered in extra-large hides of the finest quality leather or fur. Inspired by modern art, Finn Juhl designed the Chieftain Sofa as a contrast to traditional Danish furniture design and strict functionalism for form and function and material.
The Chieftain Sofa was presented together with the Chieftain Chair, or the High Chair as it is also known, at the Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition in Copenhagen in 1949. While the chair went straight into production, only one copy of the sofa was made as far as is known. That copy still exists in the same place as the exhibition, probably at the Design Museum Denmark, and is now part of the museum's permanent collection of Danish furniture design.
