Parachilna lights up your world

What more than the name the exclusive lamp brand has in common with the desert city is unclear, perhaps not much, other than the unfailing faith then, faith and hope.

The belief in the value of perfect design, genuine craftsmanship and the hope that the passing train will one day slow down at the small station to pick up or drop off a passenger. Perhaps it goes hand in hand with the hope of giving a sometimes endangered guild of artisans both the jobs and the status and attention they deserve.

Because Parachilna is a brand born out of a true and heartfelt love of design, but also of high-quality, exclusive materials and craftsmanship. It is uncompromising in its conviction to never compromise. And the fact that through its production it also contributes to preserving the knowledge of blacksmiths, glassblowers, ceramists and other craftsmen is a natural and very successful effect. It's passionate, committed with a genuine respect for the entire chain, from idea to finished product.

Already in 2015, Parachilna Wallpapers won the award for best new company, an award that was followed by several other honours and accolades from many quarters. Since its inception, the company has successfully collaborated with some of the most illustrious names in design, which continues to result in objects, many of which have already reached an almost iconic status.

"Beauty arises when design behaves badly" is a quote from Toronto-based design agency Partisans, which is behind the spectacular Gweilo lamp. Perhaps light sculpture is a more appropriate word than lamp, because it is the sculptural nature combined with the diffused light that creates the greatness of this piece. The name Gweilo comes from the Chinese word for "ghost" and it is easy to see the connection. Partisans says the idea of the lamp came from the idea that light could be captured, controlled and manipulated into an architectural sculpture.

"Gweilo seems an obvious choice when talking about Parachilna, but of course there are many other products that deserve to be recognised."

Each lamp is handmade by heating the acrylic sheets that make up the base material and then moulding them by carefully bending them into their final shape. This also means that each piece is completely unique and no Gweilo exists in another exact copy.

Early on, during Parachila's first year in 2014, the collaboration with the Swiss design trio Atelier Oï began. They created the OïPhorique series, a collection of light sources available both as pendants and floor lamps. The slim, slender art lamps have a unique construction that is not only beautiful but also, when lit, starts a calm and harmonious movement, a quiet dance of light and form. When several lamps are placed side by side and allowed to move together in an installation, the experience becomes even more effective.

The Chinoz Table Lamp combines the materials glass, ceramic and wood. At first glance, it's a fairly classic design with an urn-shaped foot on a wooden base and a glass shade. But Jaime Hayon, who is responsible for the design, has of course, true to form, opened up the possibility of much more playfulness than that. How much attitude your lamp should have is up to you. Choose a classically sober combination or mix bold colour choices with one of the patterned ceramic urns to create an obvious centrepiece on your table or shelf. Jaime Hayon is on Time Magazine's list of the world's 100 most influential designers.
