Paranormal Parachilna

Designing a lamp is one thing, transforming the source into light is another. GWEILO takes a different and ghostly approach to the properties of light.

GWEILO, 'white ghost' in Cantonese, is the series designed by Toronto-based architecture firm Partisans for Spanish lamp designer Parachilna. The lamps are characterised by their sweeping and spectral sculpting, allowing the light to follow its own arcs, creating an atmospheric, almost ghostly feel. Due to the lamp's architectural expression, it produces a different effect than traditional light sources. This allows them to be used as an accent, room divider or centrepiece. In other words, you could say that the GWEILO series is lamps, sculptures and a piece of architecture in one.

The lamps are created using a unique technique called thermoforming, which involves heating the acrylic sheet with a specially designed oven. Once hot, the sheet is sculpted and moulded - a simple but risky process that Partisans showcased at the Toronto Interior Design Show 2017.

Nordiska Galleriet has now had the honour of working with Parachilna and Partisans to produce a limited edition of 110 numbered copies of GWEILO. The lamp is designed by Alex Josephson, founder of Partisans, who together with Nordiska Galleriet met in the vision of creating a different version of GWEILO. The collaboration has resulted in a table lamp, which is smaller than the other lamps in the series. In addition, details have been added to the design, such as the covered cord and chrome frame.

From 1957 and into the future

Some age with dignity, others take the step even further and are refined over the years. Like a well-aged vintage wine, or a uniquely shaped design object. Arne Jacobsen's Grand Prix is an excellent example of the latter.
