The comeback of an icon

Tobia Scarpa was commissioned in 1969 by Cesare Cassina, one of the two brothers behind the Cassina brand, to create a piece of furniture for the Cologne exhibition.

The result was Soriana, an armchair that is still considered unique today, but when it hit the market in 1970, it really hit the furniture world like a softly shaped and highly praised bomb. A masterpiece that was immediately rewarded with both the coveted Compasso D'Oro award and the cheers of design-minded individuals.

More than 50 years have passed since the first piece was made, and for many years the series was completely out of production, instead becoming a highly sought-after commodity at auctions and with vintage dealers. And many sofas and armchairs have since been restored, renovated and carefully cared for by upholsterers around the world.

But if you're waiting for something good...

Because now Soriana is making a grand return, and both the armchairs and the 3-seater sofa are available with upholstery in both leather and fabric and in a wide range of colours.

Soriana is unique both in its visual expression and its construction, it has no internal hard structure but the soft furniture body is held together by metal staples that also create an effective drape on the back. To say that it is inviting is an understatement, here it is rather an impossibility to resist the temptation to throw yourself down and lean back.

Simply the definition of the ultimate lounge furniture. It is also named after the softness of a cat, after Scarpa gave the first prototype as a gift to his father's friend who exclaimed "Oh, it's as soft as Soriana!", the family's Siamese cat. Beyond its soft and welcoming feel, Soriana is applicable in almost any room, whether as a lone armchair in the reading corner or in a whole group, as the central gathering place in the living room.A long-awaited comeback of a piece of exquisite design history from a decade that is as relevant today as it was then.

De mjuka formernas revolution

The revolution of soft forms

It's as if a revolution has rolled in and taken over our homes. The same movement has also hit public spaces and not least our Instagram feeds. The revolution comes in soft shapes, with curved contours and it is as if all straight lines and sharp corners have been eliminated in favour of the opposite. The shapes are accompanied by materials that feel as inviting as a soft and warm fur on a chilly winter day or a knitted mohair sweater against bare skin.
