The sloping seat and lounge chair 400, also known as the Tank Chair, was created by Alvar Aalto in 1936 for the Finnish furniture manufacturer Artek. The Tank Chair 400 is a milestone in modern functionalist furniture design and is one of Alvar Aalto's earliest works, now on permanent display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The next time Aalto designed a painting it was for a fair in Milan, the Milan Triennale. The voluminous piece attracted a lot of interest and was also prized during its lifetime. Tank was an exception to the designers signature style and other paintings because of its size and background. Although Aalto had designed all his chairs and tables for various architectural destinations and public environments, the Tank chair was designed only for the Milan Triennale.

The wide seat and the strong armrests, which also serve as legs, provide great comfort, and give the chair its distinctive character, which is also reminiscent of a tank. The tank has more of a solid and powerful look, unlike many other Aalto chairs. The Tank chair has a frame and legs made of molded beech and a seat with resistant, no-sag upholstery that is also padded with polyurethane and Dacron wadding for maximum comfort and long-lasting durability.
